What I thought:
I enjoyed this novel, there were parts that drove me nuts and other parts that made those parts worth it. The parts that drove me nuts? Gullah is spoken lightly in this novel, you can still read it, but it still makes me stumble over the words and frustrates me to no end. This isn't really the authors fault, since it is the culture, but I skimmed over bits of this because I wanted to throw the book across the room after having to reread parts over and over.
I liked the overall story. It was different and interesting and I had a hard time putting the book down once I got out of the scenes of the Gullah speak. I loved the devotion that Riley shows for her brother and what she is willing to do to save him. I'm excited to read the next book in this series.

I've seen this book around and I wasn't really sure what to make of it. Glad to see that it's worth the read!
I just read this the other day and enjoyed it! Nice to have an off-beat heroine.
