Review: Bloodlines by Richelle Mead

Released: August 23, 2011
Publisher: Razorbill
Rated: YA
Series: Bloodlines, Book 1
Buy: Amazon
Sydney protects vampire secrets -- and human lives. As an alchemist, she is part of a secret group who dabbles in magic and serves to bridge the world of humans and vampires.
But when Sydney is torn from her bed in the middle of the night, she fears she’s still being punished for her complicated alliance with dhampir Rose Hathaway. What unfolds is far worse. Jill Dragomir -- the sister of Moroi Queen Lissa Dragomir -- is in mortal danger, and goes into hiding. Now Sydney must act as Jill’s protector.
The last thing Sydney wants is to be accused of sympathizing with vampires. And now she has to live with one . . .

What I thought

I'm not going to lie, this was a little hard to get into at first. It actually took me until Sydney left and started up school for me to really get into the story and to stop forcing myself to read on. I loved the Vampire Academy series and wasn't so sure about this one. I liked Sydney but I wasn't sure if I would really like a series on her point of view. That being said, I'm glad I forced myself to get through the first few chapters. I think this will be a great spin off series.

Another truth. I was Team Dimitri. That being said, I'm glad to have Adrian in this series because while I still loved him in the other series, I still had hopes that he would find someone special. I'm not sure that has happened yet, but I think it has a possibility of happening in this new series.

Really, I should have known. I've read every series that Richelle Mead has out. She's the queen of cliffhangers. This also has one. While it isn't something hugely major to the story, it still left me wanting to throw the book across the room when I realized just how she ended it. But now that I've had time to cool down (okay, so I exaggerate the book throwing just a tad), I find myself eager to see what happens because of the potential explosion that will happen at the beginning of the next book. It should be good. And I can't believe how long I have to wait to find out what happens.

Haha yes, cliffhangers are not strangers with Richelle! I haven't read this one yet I'm almost scared too because of all the mixed reviews on it. I was team Dimitri too and also hoped Adrian would have it good after VA so I'll have to read it.

It feels a little weird after reading with Rose, but definitely worth the read. And I would recommend waiting for the second book. That ending is killer!

It is a slow buildup in the beginning especially for those of us who've read the Vampire Academy series because its mostly stuff we already know plus Sydney's background but after that it was a breeze to get through, though I will admit although I relate more to Sydney than Rose she can be a bit boring at times when she's talking about school and studies xD.

Great review! This is most definitely something I would love, so it's totally being added to my TBR list. Thank you for sharing! :)

LOL I know! Richelle Mead and cliffhangers are a package deal! x) But I actually LOVED Bloodlines a lot because I could connect with Sydney so much more than I could with Rose in book 1 of VA, but maybe that's just me!

Awesome review, Aimee! I'm glad you pushed through the first few chapters too, because this is definitely an awesome book! :)
